Subterranean waters in Riviera Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula: Vulnerability and the Importance of Monitoring

    Get PDF
The Mexican Caribbean coast has great scenic beauty both on the surface and underwater, which is why it has been a developing area for tourism since the 1970s, establishing sites such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen and empowering others such as Cozumel and Tulum. Their biological richness is enormous, especially in the Mesoamerican Reef of which they are a part. However, this richness and scenic beauty are not possible without the ecological assemblages that exist within these regions’ adjacent ecosystems, mainly the surrounding seasonally dry tropical forest and the coastal wetlands that, together with the oceanographic characteristics of the Caribbean Sea, potentiate it, turning the region into the most visited in Latin America. To this end, groundwater plays a very important role in the assemblages of biotic and abiotic elements that are shared with the Caribbean Sea; thus, its constant monitoring allows us to identify how the changes that occur in the tropical forest are producing various changes in the composition and abundance of coastal reef elements. Here, we present results of our study of groundwater conditions (temp, pH, oxygen dissolved, and salinity) in nineteen cenotes and underground rivers of the Riviera Maya and six cenotes of Cozumel. We also profiled the predominant vegetation on the surface of this region, which is a seasonally dry tropical forest, to understand the components and functioning of these subterranean ecosystems to assess their vulnerability and identify their threats from human development (population growth, tourism development, mobility capacity). These threats not only affect the cave and coastal organisms but also the tropical karstic landscapes that are characteristic of these systems

The treatment processes used in the main cities of Peru are not efficient enough to eliminate wastewater. The objective was to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera seed powder on the turbidity of wastewater from oxidation wells in the district of Cajamarca, 2020. In the test, seven wastewater samples were collected in 500 mL beakers, one of which served as a control to measure the parameters considered (turbidity, conductivity, temperature and pH). Then, doses of coagulant (0.5; 0.8; 1 g) were mixed in three wastewater samples for a period of 10 minutes at 150 and 200 RPM. The different weights of Moringa oleifera influence the turbidity of the wastewater inversely. The data show no significant difference between turbidity and RPM (p 0.67) indicating that the values are similar or no difference. The different weights of the Moringa influence the turbidity of the wastewater, the optimum revolution or agitation speed is 200 RPM, the optimum weight is 0.8 g. Moringa decreases pH and increases conductivity and temperature.

Patients with Axial Spondyloarthritis Show an Altered Flexion/Relaxation Phenomenon

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic rheumatic disease characterized by the presence of inflammatory back pain. In patients with chronic low back pain, the lumbar flexion relaxation phenomenon measured by surface electromyography (sEMG) differs from that in healthy individuals. However, sEMG activity in axSpA patients has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to analyze the flexion relaxation phenomenon in axSpA patients. A study evaluating 39 axSpA patients and 35 healthy controls was conducted. sEMG activity at the erector spinae muscles was measured during lumbar full flexion movements. sEMG activity was compared between axSpA patients and the controls, as well as between active (BASDAI ≥ 4) and non-active (BASDAI 0.8 for 1/FRR) and criterion validity. ROC analysis showed good discriminant validity for axSpA patients (AUC = 0.835) vs. the control group using 1/FRR. An abnormal flexion/relaxation phenomenon exists in axSpA patients compared with controls. sEMG could be an additional objective tool in the evaluation of patient function and disease activity status

Tropical Subterranean Ecosystems in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize: A Review of Aquatic Biodiversity and Their Ecological Aspects

    Get PDF
The subterranean ecosystems in tropical areas of Mexico, North of Guatemala & Belize are very abundant because the karstic soil that allow these formations are the main composition in the Yucatán Peninsula and several mountains systems in these countries; also, they have a strong relationship with tropical forest adjacent where the main energy into the caves have an alloctonous origin. In these three countries there are three different cave conditions: a) freshwater semi-dry caves, b) flooded freshwater systems and c) anchialine systems. Mainly crustaceans and freshwater fishes are the major representative group in the aquatic diversity in these systems because the anchialine members are restricted to Yucatán Peninsula and Islands adjacent. Around 5000 entries to subterranean world there are among these countries, where the Yucatan Peninsula is the area with major caves or cenotes in comparison with southern of Mexico, North of Guatemala and Belize. Into these systems are possible found crustaceans and fishes from different families. The objective of this paper is present a review of these systems according with each karstic areas and show the current map including the location of each systems; as well their subterranean aquatic biodiversity and, finally discuss the relationships among these different areas using their biological aquatic richness in consideration with ecological subterranean conditions

Altres ajuts: Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), "A way of making Europe".Copy number (CN) polymorphisms of complement C4 play distinct roles in many conditions, including immune-mediated diseases. We investigated the association of C4 CN with systemic sclerosis (SSc) risk. Imputed total C4, C4A, C4B, and HERV-K CN were analyzed in 26,633 individuals and validated in an independent cohort. Our results showed that higher C4 CN confers protection to SSc, and deviations from CN parity of C4A and C4B augmented risk. The protection contributed per copy of C4A and C4B differed by sex. Stronger protection was afforded by C4A in men and by C4B in women. C4 CN correlated well with its gene expression and serum protein levels, and less C4 was detected for both in SSc patients. Conditioned analysis suggests that C4 genetics strongly contributes to the SSc association within the major histocompatibility complex locus and highlights classical alleles and amino acid variants of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DPB1 as C4-independent signals

Ethics, the state and public management in Latin America [Ética, estado y gestión pública en América Latina]

    No full text
Public management is understood as the set of procedures aimed at managing the available resources of the State, a political-social entity that emerged to preserve citizen interests. However, although the administrative priority is recognized in public management models, it is also alluded to that there are ethical, axiological and philosophical considerations in the background, which must be oriented towards a review of the social, to question the role of the State. and point out its weakening in the face of Western globalization. For this reason, the article aims to analyze the ethical dimension of public management, considering the following elements: 1. The State as a regulatory entity of public life and social organization 2. The corporate model of the State, in which public policies, social spending and interest in the collective good are diminished. 3. The ethical dimension of public management, which calls for the construction of axiological categories, which connect the meaning of what is public with social welfare. The method applied in the research is the hermeneutic-documentary review. The conclusions of the research are oriented to the urgency of articulating ethics with public Management, building management alternatives that make it possible to correct the shortcomings that have occurred due to the weakening of the Nation-State
